We asked our photographer Hugo Giroaurd a few questions.
Q – You have been working with WCRDL on and off since 2014. What appealed to you most about photographing roller derby?
A – I like the quick pace of the sport, there is a little something about seeing girls kick butt.
Q – During the 2014 season you traveled with Gang Green to several games and tournaments and photographed many different teams. What did you enjoy about that experience?
A – Seeing the similarity between teams and the friendship post game as well.
Q – Does taking portraits of athletes differ from regular portraits that you work on?
A – Absolutely, there is a definite intensity on their faces and also their body language. When i do simple portrait the subject is still and peaceful. I try to portrait happiness. When I photograph an athlete, it is quite different. I attempt to catch their aggressiveness on the track makes them a perfect subject for facial expression.
Q – What do you like the best about photographing our sport?
A – I love the starting line action!
